In my state they have Legal Aid. They have that, or something similar to it in every state. Contact your states bar association and they can put you in contact with them. Legal Aid hires attorney’s to handle cases for low income families. If your matter is criminal, you should be able to be represented by the public defender or a court appointed attorney. There are some types of actions that attorney’s will not take for free. In general, the types of cases that are taken for free are criminal, divorce and child custody. If your matter is a personal injury, many personal injury attorney’s work on a contingency basis (they don’t get paid unless you win). Contact your states bar association for the types of aid available for your specific matter.
